Dancing Week 3

Ok, so I’ve gotten through 3 weeks of dance lessons as I prepare to compete in a ballroom dance competition in October.  I’m taking lessons at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio on Fulton Rd.  As I mentioned when I first started taking the lessons I’m not particularly coordinated so I was a bit worried about trying to pick up 6 dances, but, I have to say I feel like I’m making some progress!  I’m not looking at my feet quite as much as I did and I think my posture is definitely improving.  Plus I’m having a blast!  I never thought I’d be able to dance in 2 1/2 inch heels but the official dance shoes are unbelievably comfortable!!  I’m thinking about getting some just to wear when I’m dressed up because I swear they practically massage your feet!  My friends keep asking me to show off a few steps that I’ve learned and I must look somewhat credible because they’re not falling down laughing at me!  That just shows what good teachers they have at Fred Astaire Dance Studio.  I’m telling you, now is a great time to start taking some dance lessons.  The new season of Dancing With the Stars is about to start and I’ll REALLY be watching, hoping to get a few extra hints!  And, speaking of Dancing With the Stars, Elena Grinenko is coming to the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Canton on Saturday September 20th!  She’s going to be giving some group lessons so if you’re a fan of the show this is a GREAT opportunity!  I’m planning on being there (again, hoping to get a few extra pointers!) and I hope I see you there!  I’ll give you the phone number for Fred Astaire Dance Studio so you can call to set up some lessons or register to see Elena Grinenko…it’s (330) 453-4028.  You can also go to their website at http://www.fredastairecanton.com/.

Looking for a Good Deal?

We’re all looking for a great deal.  Some people are more patient than others, going to different stores comparing prices to find the best value.  If you’re like me you don’t have that kind of patience.  Yeah, I know that patience is a virtue but that’s one I’m still working on.  I may have found something that can cut out all that time when you need to find a good deal.  Check out this website www.DealAlerter.com.  What you do is go there, pick an item and check the current price range.  If prices seem too high, you can set  a lower target price.  The site automatically rechecks store prices daily, and then sends you an e-mail alert if the price drops below the target price.  They monitor up to 13,000 online stores.  So now when you see something you really want but it’s too much, use the site to do comparison pricing for you so you can get the item for less!

Hoax Busters

How many times have you gotten emails that say if you forward this to 20 people you’ll get $5,000?  Or you’ll get a free laptop, phone, etc.?  I can’t tell you how many foreign ‘lotteries’ I’ve won or how many people from overseas want to give me millions of dollars.   I hate those emails!!  If you want to see if they’re true (they’re not) go to www.hoaxbusters.org.  This site has important information like 5 tell tale signs to identify a hoax message.  Don’t get fooled into believing these emails.  Rule of thumb I go by, if it looks too good to be true, it is.

Skunk Solutions

You may have heard me talking about the fact that it seems like the skunks are out in force this summer.  Have you noticed?  I swear that at least 3 times a week I’ll be driving home and turn onto my street and I smell them.  I don’t ever remember them being this bad!  I got some tips from some listeners on how to get the stench off your dog.  One person suggested using Scope mouthwash.  You soak a sponge in it and keep washing your dog’s face.  The good thing about using Scope is that if it gets in your pet’s mouth it won’t hurt them (heck, maybe their breath will smell a little better!!).  The listener who suggested this said the smell went away after several washings.  I also had a groomer call and tell me that they have a shampoo especially for getting rid of the skunk smell.  It’s called Nil Odor Shampoo.  It’s worth a try.  I know how bad it smells when you’re several streets away from a skunk, I can’t even imagine how bad it is for a pet who gets sprayed directly and they’re sense of smell is significantly superior to ours!!

Color Your Career!

You’ve probably taken personality tests, right?  Well, how about evaluating your career and personality according to what colors you like?  I found a website that does that.  Click here www.careerpath.com and take the color test to see if you’re in the right field or if you’re thinking of changing your career get an idea of what you might excel at.  I took the test and I ended up back in broadcasting, which is a good thing since I like what I do!  But it’s interesting and fun and gives you a little insight into yourself.  Plus you get some options maybe you hadn’t thought of before!

Dancing

So you may have heard that I’m going to be competing in an amateur ballroom competition in October.  Yes, it’s true!  So I started taking dance lessons last week at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio on Fulton Road in Canton.  Now, you need to realize I have NO IDEA how to ballroom dance!  Talk about taking me out of my comfort zone!!  But it has been really fun (and funny, too!!)!  I’m learning the foxtrot, waltz, tango, cha cha, rumba and swing dances.  Yes, you read that correctly…6 dances!!!   Needless to say, I’m a bit intimidated.  Jerry at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio is my teacher and I can tell you I will be testing his patience!!  As an avid fan of Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance I at least know SOME of the terminology (which is basically limited to understanding the foxtrot is supposed to look effortless, and the tango is supposed to look somewhat angry) but that is where my knowledge ends.  Yes, I’m rather dangerous on the dancefloor so if you find yourself in a 20 foot radius around me I’d watch out because at this point I’m basically flailing about trying not to look at my feet or fall on my rear!  But I actually think I saw some improvement last night at my lesson.  I’ll keep you updated on how things are going.  It is a lot of fun and, honestly, I think it’s something everyone ought to try it.  First of all, like I said, it’s FUN!  Second, it’s good exercise.  Third, it’s always good to challenge yourself and do something completely different.  If you’re thinking about it, pick up the phone and call the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.  I’ll even give you the phone number, (330) 453-4028.  Hopefully, I’ll see you there!
