Catching Up

I took yesterday off so I didn't get a chance to blog so I'm going to comment on some things from over the weekend.  First of all....how about that Browns' game????!!!!  Wow!  That was exciting!  I don't think I ever remember watching a Browns game with such horrendous weather!  I wouldn't have wanted to be there in person (Rik was and he said he was still thawing out all day yesterday) but I'm sure glad I watched it on TV.  I don't know how any of those guys kept their footing.  Jamal Lewis was a force to be reckoned with and Braylon Edwards was unstoppable!  But the player I'm still so impressed with is Phil Dawson.  I thought his first field goal was amazing but that 49 yard long field goal was just incredible!  The announcers kept saying it was going to be a fake because he would never try such a long kick in those conditions but he kept scraping away the snow on the field and I thought, he's really going to try it. And then he hit it!  Wow.  Just amazing.  Let's hope they can win next week!

Then, Survivor wrapped up on Sunday night.  You know I've been a Survivor fan since the first season.  Well, once James was voted out I started routing for Todd.  Yeah, he's a schemer and a backstabber but in the game of Survivor that's what it's all about.  At the final Tribal Council the jury gets to talk and ask questions to the final three contestants.  There's always someone on the jury who berates at least one of the finalists about lying and backstabbing their way into the finals.  I have no patience for that.  I mean, come on!  It's Survivor!  I think there may have been a total of 2 people who have won Survivor in 15 seasons without doing an inordinate amount of lying and backstabbing.  But if you are going to be upset by that then you need to sign up for another game because that's what Survivor is.  Ok, I'll get off my soap box now.  But seriously, if you don't know anything about the game at all, why would you sign up???  Anyway, the next season (which starts in February) pits super fans of the show against fan favorites and I know that one of the contestants from this season will be on that.  My guess is that James will be back.  Any thoughts?  Also, on a final note, I've had a few people suggest I should try out for Survivor since I'm such a fan.  Not a chance.  I know what I get like when I can't sleep and I can't eat and I would be the first person voted off.  It would not be pretty to watch.  I think Mark Burnett and Jeff Probst would probably physically remove me from the game just to put everyone else out of their misery.

Eating Without the Guilt

This time of year is really tough for people trying to eat healthy and watch their waistline.  With all the parties and goodies people bring to work it's hard not to put on a pound or two.  And then there's Christmas dinner!  We all stuff ourselves and then work it off by sitting on the couch Christmas afternoon.  Well, I've got some information for you that might make you feel a little better about that big meal.  Running to the store for 10 minutes for ingredients you've forgotten will burn about 40 calories.  Of course, if you LITERALLY run to the store you'll burn off a lot more, especially depending on where you have to run to!  Carrying a 20 pound turkey from the car to the kitchen will burn 25 calories.  Baking an apple pie will burn 114 calories.  It doesn't count if you stop at the store and buy a pre-made pie!  Cleaning up the house for 30 minutes before company comes burns about 126 calories.  If you're stuck in the kitchen, don't worry,  I have good news for you.  Chopping, stirring and cooking for 2 hours burns 360 calories.  See?  We can cook and still burn calories!  Now, if you're going to someone else's house, they're doing the cooking and all you're doing is eating....well, all bets are off!

Christmas Shopping

Are you done with your Christmas shopping yet?  My sister and I went out this weekend and did some power shopping.  It was a good start for me but I still have a lot to do.  Hard to believe Christmas is only 2 weeks away!!!  But something we noticed as we went in and out of stores Saturday night, there were fewer people than we expected out shopping.  Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of people out but not as many as I thought there would be.  I wonder if it's because so many people are shopping on-line this year.  I saw a study where there were significantly more people shopping on-line this year than last year.  I have a friend who absolutely HATES to shop so she loves shopping on-line.  What do you do?  Do you like to shop in your pjs at home in front of your computer or do you like to actually go into the stores and see what you're buying?  I prefer to go to the stores because I need to see what it is I'm purchasing and, if it's clothes, I want to feel the fabric, see the colors myself and get an idea of the size.  But I will concede that shopping without leaving home is tempting.  I was pretty tired when I got home Saturday night and my feet were tired!  I just need to gear up to finish up my shopping in the next week.

What Shopping Personality Are You?

This time of year we're all out trying to find those perfect gifts for family and friends.  We battle the crowds, the weather, the time constraints, etc.  Now we may have to battle our personalities, too!  No, I'm not suggesting we all have issues...but there is a professor from Kent State University that says their are four types of shopping personalities ranging from normal to psychotic.  He says that normal consumers spend less than they earn and save for things they don't have the money for.  Then there are the neurotic shoppers.  Most of what they spend is time, and a lot of it wasted looking around without buying anything.  Compulsive shoppers are what you might expect.  And psychotic shoppers take their shopping to the next level, spending so much that finanacial and legal problems result.  So, what type of shopper are you????

Funny Bridal Dance

You know, the first dance couples do as man and wife can be very moving for the family and friends.  Some couples take a while to choose just the right song to convey how much they love each other, others have 'their' song in mind for months before the wedding.  This couple obviously did a lot of planning on this bridal dance.  Check it out and have a good laugh!  Enjoy!

Light Up Canton

Are you coming to Canton tomorrow night to Light Up Downtown?  I hope so!  If you've never been there it's a great event!  The Illumination Show and Fireworks will start at 6pm right in the heart of downtown Canton.  Then, after that, there will be all sorts of entertainment going on until 8:30pm.  Bring the kids because there will be face painting, strolling choirs, dancing, crafts, a live nativity scene, ice skating exhibitions, goody bags for the kids and, of course, Santa!  Make sure to stop by the radio station because we'll be outside having fun, too!  The big tree at Central Plaza will be lit and there will be horse drawn wagon rides and trolley rides, too.  It's just a really fun event for the entire family and it's free.  Plus there will be free parking available at the Millennium Centre Garage, New Market Garage, Cornerstone lot, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Christ Presbyterian Church and the Stark County District Library.  The activities include 12 city blocks.  Hopefully, we'll see you tomorrow night for Light Up Downtown Canton!

Writer's Strike

As I was watching the Heroes finale last night I was thinking how bummed I was that I wasn't going to see another new episode until after the writers' strike is over.  This afternoon I got a call on the air talking about the writers' strike and how it might not work so much in their favor since, without new episodes to watch, viewers may go to other networks and check out other shows they don't normally get to see.  That may not bode well for when the writers go back.  They may lose some of their audience.  This may also get some of us who may be just a bit addicted to TV to get off the couch and do other things.  I was reading an article today that if the strike continues much longer it could put in jeopardy the entire rest of the season and could be a problem with pilots of potential new shows for next fall.  I was surprised to hear that because I thought we'd start seeing new shows within a few weeks after the strike is settled.  Apparently, that's not the case.   I really don't remember the strike from 1988 and how it affected all the TV shows.  What do you think?  Will you look for other ways to fill your time or will you remain waiting with baited breath for your shows to come back?
