Shocker!!

Ok, did your jaw hit the floor when Tom Bergeron announced SABRINA was the one getting the boot last night on Dancing with the Stars???  I sat right up and said, No Way!  When she and Cameron were in the bottom two I thought for sure that Cameron was a goner.  I think he thought so, too, by the look on his and Edyta’s faces.  My call was that Marie was on her way out.  I think she was expecting it as well.  But we always have to remember that it’s all about fan base.  The season Drew Lachey won Jerry Rice should have been out long before the finals.  I love Jerry Rice but he was not the best dancer and it was his fan base that kept him in until the finals.  It definitely makes things interesting this season because a lot of these stars have great fans.  Cameron’s got the soap opera fans, Jane has all the fans from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Jennie has all the 90210 fans and Mel B has the Spice Girl fans who are so excited for the upcoming tour.  But, then again, I expected all the Cheetah Girl fans to be voting like crazy and we all know how many fans Wayne Newton has but they didn’t save him.  And did you get the idea there was a romance between Sabrina and her partner, Mark?  Hmmmmmmm…..

By the way, if you ever thought you’d like to try being on Dancing With the Stars it’s now a video game.  It’s available for Wii and Playstation 2.  You get to choose which celebrity you’d like to be.  You get to choose from Laila Ali, Emmitt Smith, Mario Lopez. Lisa Rinna, Joey Lawrence, Stacie Keibler, Joey McIntyre, Shanna Moakler or Monique Coleman and you can choose which pro you’d like to be paired up with.  Of course, I’d choose Maks!  I would think that if it’s available on Wii it would be a good excercise regime, right?  Kind of like Dance Dance Revolution.   My niece got that for Christmas last year and my whole family tried it.  Wow.  I felt REALLY uncoordinated.  Maybe I shouldn’t get Dancing With the Stars video game after all.

2007 Education Celebration

Every year I go to the Mix 94.1 Education Celebration and come away awed by the educators who are honored.  Their creativity, dedication and desire to inspire students is truly amazing!  I knew early in my college career I would not be a good school teacher.  Organization is not one of my virtues.  Neither is patience.  And just thinking about having to BE at work by 7:00am each day gave me anxiety attacks!!  Last night we honored an All County Rookie Team that consisted of educators with 3 years or less of experience.  Out of that group of gifted teachers we were able to recognize Julie Nelson of Clearmount Elementary in the North Canton City Schools system as Rookie of the Year.  We also congratulated our All County Teaching Team which was put together of 1 teacher from each of the Stark County school systems and our Teacher of the Year is Angela Smith or North Canton Hoover High School.  What was really interesting last night was that we found out the Teacher of the Year taught the Rookie of the Year when she was in school.  We also had the opportunity to honor our Lifetime Achievement Award winner which is Congressional First Lady Mrs. Mary Regula.  Hearing the accomplishments of these three outstanding educators was incredible!  They are truly wonderful and if you or your child has had the opportunity to be taught by any of the teachers honored last night you should feel very fortunate.  They are really making a difference in the future.

Top Movie Soundtracks

We all love movies and music is a big part of movies.  Vanity Fair has come out with a list of the Top 50 movie soundtracks.  Here’s the top 10:

10. The Big Chill
  9. American Graffiti
  8. Saturday Night Fever
  7. Trainspotting
  6. Superfly
  5. The Graduate
  4. Pulp Fiction
  3. The Harder They  Fall
  2. A Hard Day’s Night
  1. Purple Rain

Now, I think some were missed that should have been in the top 10.  First of all, how about Footloose?  That was a great soundtrack!  Also, what about the musicals that were made into movies i.e. Sound of Music.  You can’t get much better than the Sound of Music!!  I threw it out to the listeners today on the air and they also added some great soundtracks that were missing.  They suggested Grease, Top Gun, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Dirty Dancing and Tommy.

So what do you think is missing from the list?

Haunted Houses and Scary Movies

Well, since it’s almost Halloween I thought I’d talk about some scary things today.  If you love haunted houses and you’re willing to travel to find the best ones, go to www.inventorspot.com and look under ‘Popular Content’ for their list of the 13 best haunted houses.  There’s one listed in Cleveland.  It’s the Seven Floors of Hell.  I’m really not the best at haunted houses, I get spooked pretty easily.  So if you go, let me know how it is!

I also talked about the movies that scared you when you were a kid (or an adult!).  I always remember being a little kid and watching all the B movies on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  Remember “Attack of the Giant Leeches”?  No?  Well, it’s not like it won an Oscar or anything but it did traumatize a little girl in the 70s!  I got a lot of great calls today from listeners who were also creeped out by some movies over the years.  I’ve listed them below.

Scary Movies:
Flowers in the Attic
The Thing: Written in Blood
Salem’s Lot
Blair Witch Project
The Exorcist
The Ants
Candyman
The Serpent and the Rainbow
The Believers (this one gave me nightmaires!)
The Birds (there’s a new version of this movie coming out next year)
The Beast Within
Silence of the Lambs

Did we miss any that really horrified you?

AAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!

Okay, did you watch the Indians games over the weekend?  Oh, that was painful!  I know I said that during the game on 10/13 I just kept thinking “will the Red Sox just score in the extra innings to put us out of our misery” and I felt bad for thinking that, especially when the Indians won in the 11th.  I got my hopes up that we’d really make it to the World Series and that this was our year.  I was disappointed when we didn’t clinch last Thursday but I thought, “we can take one in Boston, we did it before.”   Saturday’s game was tough to watch.  I was at my parents’ house celebrating three family birthdays (my mom, sister and niece) and after they opened presents we sat down and started watching the game.  After we were down 4-0 I thought, ok, it’s better to fall behind early so we have more time to come back.  Well, by the time they scored 10 I pretty much knew it would take a miracle to come back.  But I thought, the team that’s been dominating all year will show up on Sunday when it’s do or die.  And you know the rest.  So I’m left with the phrase I’m so tired of saying…WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR!  I still love the Tribe, but they just broke my heart.

Tribe Heartbreak

Ok, did you stay up to watch the game last night?  Wow! That was a heartbreaker!!  I SO wanted the Indians to win at home last night!!  Now we have to go back to Boston and take one from them.  I said this on the air earlier this week but as a Cleveland sports fan over the years it’s hard.  Last Saturday night I was coming home from my sister’s house in Cleveland around 11pm and the Tribe was in the 8th inning tied with Boston.  As the game kept going and going and going I caught myself thinking, ‘Oh, Boston, just score already and put us out of our misery because you’re going to win the game anyway!’  Yeah, I know, where’s my loyalty?  It’s not that I’m not loyal, I’m just a Cleveland fan that’s used to always losing in the end.  I watched Michael Jordan’s shot over Craig Ehlo to knock us out of the playoffs.  I watched the fumble and the drive when it actually happened.   I don’t know about you but I’m SO SICK of seeing those two events replayed over and over in highlight (lowlight for us) films every year!  And this year watching Ohio State get beaten in the National Championship and the Cavs get swept in the finals was just hard.  So I HOPE the Indians can break this streak so we can banish the phrase ‘Wait til next year!’  GO TRIBE!!!!

Dancing with the Stars

Are you watching Dancing with the Stars?  It gets addicting!  Unfortunately, last night was Drew Lachey’s last night co-hosting.  He announced that Samantha Harris would be returning next week.  I’m going to miss him as co-host.  I thought he really loosened up the last few weeks and he was getting pretty good with Tom Bergeron.  Oh, well….He’ll be hosting that new dance show with Bruno and Carrie Ann in mid season.  I’m not a huge fan of Samantha Harris.  I actually think Tom Bergeron could host it just fine by himself.  He’s funny and quick!  But I guess they need someone to play the straight man to his comedian.  Anyway, Wayne Newton was eliminated last night.  It was the right choice.  He really wasn’t keeping up with the rest of the pack.  And was it just me or did Cheryl Burke really seem to lack enthusiasm this season?  Maybe it’s because she knew she wouldn’t be there very long.  I mentioned this yesterday during my show but I think the judges are definitely a kinder gentler version of themselves this season!  They were pretty brutal in Season 2 and even last season they were more critical.  I don’t know if someone sat down with them and told them to back off but I swear they’re really candy coating it more this year.  That’s ok with me.  They’re still giving constructive criticism but they’re wrapping some enthusiastic encouragement around them, too.  Anyway, who do you think will take the mirror ball trophy this time?  I think it might be a woman.  It could come down to Sabrina, Mel B. (I’d love to see Maks win!) or even Jane.  I think Marie just won’t be able to do the really difficult dances and Jennie is too tentative.  What do you think?

Haunted B&Bs

Well, even if it doesn’t exactly FEEL like October according to the calendar it is so it’s time to start thinking about Halloween.  I mentioned this yesterday but thought I’d expand a bit here.   There’s a website that lists a comprehensive list of bed and breakfasts that are supposed to be haunted.  The website is www.BedandBreakfast.com.  If you like to get a little spooked you might want to check one out.  Some of them that are listed include Bottger Mansion of Old Town, Albuquerque, NM; 1888 Linburg House, Goliad, TX; Bingham Hall B&B, New Ulm, MN; Rivercene Mansion B&B, Boonville, MO; Old Harbour Inn, Savannah, GA; Carambola Inn B&B, Fuquay-Varina, NC; Manchester Inn, Ocean Grove, NJ; 1871 House, New York, NY; Historic Inns of Rockland, Rockland, ME and Brass Lantern Inn, Stowe, VT.  If you decide to try any of them out let me know if you encounter any ghosts!!  I’m too chicken to try them out myself so I’ll have to live vicariously through you.  I don’t even like horror movies so I would never do well at a haunted bed and breakfast!  Ask Maddie how I did at a local haunted house a few years ago.  It was pretty amusing to everyone else!

Reality star vs. reality star

Did you hear the news story about Danny Bonaduce being investigated for battery for tossing ex-Survivor contestant Johnny Fairplay over his shoulder during an award show on Tuesday?  Apparently, they were both at an awards show when it happened.  Watch the video by clicking on this website www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1213872318 and make up your own mind as to who’s at fault.  It seems to me that Johnny started it.  He’s such a jerk I’m sure people were applauding when Danny flipped him.  Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see what happens.  Have a great weekend and GO TRIBE!!!

TV this week

So, have you been checking out the new season on TV?  My DVR has been smoking trying to keep up!  Of course, I have all the reality shows I’m addicted to like Survivor, Dancing With the Stars, Kid Nation, Beauty and the Geek, etc.  I’m having a blast watching Dancing With the Stars!   Of course, I’m hoping Mel B. does well because she’s partnered with Maks and he’s my favorite professional dancer.  I think Drew’s doing a pretty good job filling in for Samantha Harris.  He seems to finally be loosening up and having fun.  By the time he does get his hosting legs she’ll be back, but it’s good training for him because he’s going to be hosting the new dancing show with Bruno and Carrie Ann.

As for scripted TV…well, for some strange reason my DVR decided to not record ABC after 9pm last Thursday so I missed the season premieres of Grey’s Anatomy and Big Shots.  I’ve heard a lot of negative reviews for Big Shots but it has Michael Vartan so it can’t be THAT bad, can it?  I’ll just have to catch it tonight and hope I didn’t miss too much last week.  Of course, this also is the week that the Tribe starts playoff action so….what to watch, what to watch??  Tough choice.  Men in Trees starts next Friday and I hope it does better this year on Friday night than last year.  It initially was on Fridays but got moved to Thursdays after Grey’s Anatomy and now they moved it back.  I’m so tired of networks moving the shows!  Just leave them where they were so we can find them!

So what do you think about this fall’s shows?  Any you think that will end up getting cancelled soon?   Until next time, have a great week!
